Just recently, a group of scientists used 3D printing to invent the microscope that is durable, mobile and captures high-resolution images. The 3D-printed microscope provides inexpensive medical options to third-world countries moving forward in its application. With the microscope, scientists were able to produce images that can theoretically detect and diagnose diseases such as malaria, diabetes and many others.

The Power of the 3D-Printed Microscope

This 3D-printed microscope is very easy to operate and doesn’t require extensive maintenance. This makes it perfect to use in third-world countries and areas where healthcare is scarce and difficult to reach.

The new microscope is built using digital holographic microscopy technology. It is capable of producing 3D images with a resolution twice that of images produced by digital holographic microscopy.

Aside from medicine, it can be also used for biological research, manufacturing, education and even on defense.

The entire microscope is made from 3D printed pieces and optical components that you can usually find on modern microscopes. That is why it can be easily and cheaply reproduced. It can still be made even cheaper if other kinds of laser sources and image sensors would be used, instead. Mass production would even lower its price.

Testing this New Microscope

To test how innovative this new microscope is, researches recorded images of a resolution chart and used a certain algorithm to recreate high-res images. They have found out that this new technology can magnify images that are as tiny as 0.775 microns, twice the resolution that common microscopes can detect. The resolution can still be improved even more by using a light source that has shorter wavelengths.

Together with other experiments, its inventors have now declared this new 3D-printed microscope ready to be released into the general public. However, they are still working to boost its resolution even more and enhance its functionality without making it more expensive.
